Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 321 Stainless Steel Chemical Processing
Chemical processing requires raw materials to undergo chemical conversion to change their composition. This process involves the handling of corrosive materials at high temperatures. As a result, chemical processing equipment and components, such as storage tanks, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers must withstand hostile operating environments. Type 321 stainless steel is a stabilized stainless steel plate that offers many advantages over other alloys. This titanium-stabilized stainless steel has excellent mechanical properties, along with resistance to intergranular corrosion, with high creep and stress rupture thresholds.
321 Stainless Steel Properties
The properties of titanium-stabilized 321 stainless steel tubing, sheet, plate, pipe, and bar make this grade of stainless steel an excellent choice for prolonged high temperature exposure, such as those found in chemical processing. Because intergranular corrosion and temperature sensitizations are concerns for chemical processing equipment, 321 stainless steel plate offers higher creep and stress rupture properties. Type 321 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (800-1500°F). Also, 321 stainless steel plate can resist oxidation up to 1500°F, a great attribute for chemical processing equipment. Alloy 321 cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It can be hardened by cold working and can be easily welded and processed. Type 321 stainless steel is ductile and forms easily.
In chemical processing applications, 321 stainless steel can be used in most diluted organic acids and in pure phosphoric acid at lower temperatures without corrosion. The alloy also resists polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking in hydrocarbon processing service.
