Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 321 Stainless Steel Expansion Joints
Expansion joints are designed to safely absorb heat-induced expansion and contraction while holding construction materials together. These expansion joints are often found between sections of bridges, buildings, process plant piping systems, railway tracks, and ships. The materials held together by the expansion joints expand and contract due to seasonal temperature changes or other heat sources. Type 321 stainless steel is an ideal material for expansion joints because of its ability to perform well under extreme temperature changes and its resistance to corrosion.
Alloy 321 Stainless Steel Properties
Type 321 stainless steel tubing, sheet, plate, pipe, and bar have properties that make this alloy an excellent choice for expansion joints. The titanium found in Alloy 321 allows this grade of stainless steel plate to withstand temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range without threat of intergranular attack. With a higher creep and stress rupture threshold, type 321 stainless steel is a perfect choice for construction materials where safety and durability is a concern. Along with intergranular corrosion resistance, this alloy has good general corrosion resistance. It can withstand temperatures and resist oxidation up to 1500°F. Alloy 321 cannot be hardened by heat treatment and this alloy possesses excellent low-temperature toughness. Furthermore, type 321 stainless steel can be easily welded and machined.
