Stainless Steel Plate

Alloy 347 Stainless Steel in Chemical Processing

In chemical processing, fabricated equipment components are subjected to constant and intermittent exposure to sulfuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric, and acetic acids. Such a hostile operating environment requires components to withstand both corrosive environments and high temperatures. Depending on the type of stainless steel used for fabricated plate products such as storage tanks and heat exchangers, some are resistant when the chemical is at a low or moderate concentration, but are attacked at higher concentrations. Choosing the right type of stainless steel can mean the difference between process failure and total product reliability.

Type 347 stainless steel is a high performance stainless steel that ensures maximum efficiency even in hostile operating environments. As a modification of 304 stainless steel, 347 stainless steel is similar to type 321 stainless steel in that both were specifically developed for repeated intermittent exposure to application temperatures above 800°F and up to 1650°F and for corrosion resistance. The presence of stabilizing columbium in 347 stainless steel makes it resistant to intergranular corrosion after exposure to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 800 – 1500°F. Type 347 has good general corrosion resistance that is comparable to 304 stainless steel. This is especially beneficial for high temperature operations where 304 stainless steel is subject to intergranular attack after exposure above 800°F. The combination of heat-resistant properties and good corrosion resistance makes it an extremely useful material for chemical process equipment.
