Stainless Steel Plate

Alloy 410 Stainless Steel in Sugar Processing

The process to transform cane sugar into refined white sugar takes many steps, including crushing the raw product to release sugar cane juice, clarifying the juice and filtering impurities, crystallizing to produce molasses, and boiling the substance to produce raw sugar crystals. From handling raw sugar cane in the beginning of the process through juice production, corrosion and abrasion are considered two of the major issues with the sugar processing equipment, such as cane tables, carriers, and mill internals and diffusers.

Many choose 410 stainless steel plate because of its combination of strength, corrosion, and abrasion resistance. This is why type 410 stainless steel is ideal in cane sugar processing. With the high levels of heat and steam used in this process, coupled with the sticky environment of the syrup and molasses tanks, sugar processing can become a somewhat corrosive process. Type 410 stainless steel provides excellent slideability to the substances, preventing a sticky situation from hampering production.

410 Stainless Steel Properties

The hardness and corrosion-resistant properties and composition of type 410 stainless steel are what makes it ideal for a number of applications, including sugar processing. Alloy 410 is a 12% chromium martensitic stainless steel that can not only be heat-treated, but is also pliable and can be formed. Type 410 stainless steel plate can be found across sugar processing plants in the chutes and other parts that carry the sugary substances throughout the refining process. The fact that type 410 stainless steel is resistant to oxidation also makes it ideal to handle the high temperatures of the boilers involved in this process.
