Sandmeyer Steel Company’s stainless steel and nickel alloy plate products are used extensively in the food processing industry. Operating conditions require corrosion resistance along with resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and intergranular corrosion. Cleanliness and hygiene are also essential.

304L/304 is the primary grade for food processing equipment. It can be used for tanks, pipework, and machinery. 316L/316 comes into play in applications for more corrosive food (meat/blood, foods with moderate salt content).

Duplex alloys LDX-2101®, 2205, 2304, and 2507 are used where corrosive foods (hot brine with solids and stagnant and salty foods) are present. They are also utilized for large tanks, tank farms, and silos where the use of thinner material cross sections has cost benefits.

Superaustenitic grades 904L and SSC-6MO along with nickel alloys 200/201 and 825 are used for the most corrosive applications in the food process industry.

309S/309H/309 and 310S/310H/310 are the materials of choice for hot acetic and citric acid service. 321H/321, 347H/347, and nickel alloy 600 are also found in high temperature applications in the food processing industry.
