Pulp and paper mills use Sandmeyer Steel Company’s stainless steel, nickel alloy plate, and titanium products to avoid iron contamination of the paper and to resist process corrosion. Although most mills use similar processes, there are mill to mill differences that can impact corrosion behavior.
As the process technology develops, the industry is now making things cheaper and simpler utilizing faster and larger scale equipment. Add to that the desire to minimize maintenance shutdowns and it is likely that carbon steel will be phased out of the alkaline section of Kraft mills. Paper machines are now going to all stainless construction. Reduced water use and emission reductions are achieved by using closed systems that re-use liquors. The bleaching process is moving towards using less or even eliminating chlorine or chlorine dioxide.
The use of titanium in the bleaching process is being eliminated and replaced by superduplex 2507 and superduplex SSC-6MO with 2205 being an alternate material for mild bleaching conditions. In tanks and other structures, there is a move away from 304L and 316L and to the usage of duplex alloys LDX2101, 2205 and 2304.
Here are some Sandmeyer Steel Company grades that find use in the pulp and paper industry.
